The Creation of George Brown College
The college was established in 1967 as part of Ontario’s public college system. It was named after George Brown, a 19th-century politician and newspaper publisher. Before the college’s founding, the Provincial Institute of Trades (PIT), established in 1951, served as its predecessor. PIT was created by Ontario’s Department of Labour to provide training in trades like hairstyling, mechanics, and welding.
When George Brown College was formed, it absorbed the Provincial Institute of Trades, four adult education centres operated by the Toronto Board of Education, and five nursing schools in Toronto.
In 1973, the college expanded with the opening of the Casa Loma Campus, marking a significant milestone in its development.

Who Was George Brown?
The college is named after George Brown, a British-Canadian journalist, politician, and one of the Fathers of Confederation. Born in 1818 in Scotland, Brown received his education at the Royal High School and Southern Academy in Edinburgh before working in his family’s publishing business.
In 1837, George and his father emigrated to New York, later expanding their business ventures into New England, upstate New York, and Canada. In 1843, George became the publisher of a new newspaper, the Banner, and in 1844, he launched Toronto Globe, which would become one of Canada’s most influential newspapers.
Brown was also a prominent political figure, known for founding Canada’s Liberal Party in 1867. A fierce critic of John A. Macdonald’s Conservative policies, he championed progressive reforms that earned him widespread respect.
