The History of Toronto’s Majestic Royal York Hotel

The Fairmont Royal York Hotel, a member of Historic Hotels Worldwide since 2018, boasts a long and distinguished history. Today, we delve into its story. More on toronto1.one.

The Construction of the Hotel: The Grand Vision

The creation of this iconic historical building began in 1927, when the company Canadian Pacific Hotels, a subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Railway, undertook its construction on the site of the former Queen’s Hotel. By the time Canadian Pacific Hotels acquired the property, it was in decline. The company aimed to replace it with a grand, luxurious structure that would become Toronto’s premier landmark.

Renowned architectural firms Ross and Macdonald and Sproatt and Rolph collaborated on the design, envisioning a 28-story skyscraper that elegantly fused Château-style and Art Deco architecture. Inside, the hotel featured Edwardian design principles and intricate Romanesque decor. It housed over 1,000 rooms, each equipped with modern innovations of the time, such as radios, telephones, and private baths. The hotel also boasted a 12,000-book library, ten elevators, and a 12-bed hospital wing. Construction took nearly two years and cost $16 million CAD, culminating in a structure of unparalleled grandeur.

The Hotel’s Rise to Prominence

When the Royal York Hotel debuted in 1929, it became the tallest building in the British Empire. Canadian Pacific Hotels hosted an extravagant opening gala attended by over 2,300 guests. Lord Willingdon, then Governor General of Canada, presided over the ceremony and became the hotel’s first official guest. The Toronto Board of Trade celebrated with a luncheon in honour of E. W. Beatty, the president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and its board of directors. That evening, a glamorous gala took place, complete with guided tours.

The Royal York quickly gained international acclaim, becoming one of North America’s premier destinations. Over the years, it welcomed numerous global celebrities, including Gene Kelly, Bob Hope, and Cary Grant. Its Imperial Room hosted performances by legendary artists such as Marlene Dietrich, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, Peggy Lee, and Ella Fitzgerald. The British Royal Family also frequented the hotel, starting with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) during their 1939 Canadian royal tour. Queen Elizabeth II often stayed in the Royal Suite during her visits to Toronto from 1951 to 2000.

Despite its impressive size, the hotel underwent an expansion in 1957, overseen by Ross, Patterson, Townsend & Fish. This renovation added a magnificent new wing to the building’s east side. Further enhancements included the installation of grand spiral staircases in the lobby.

In 2001, Canadian Pacific Hotels rebranded as Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, and the Royal York became the Fairmont Royal York. Today, it is jointly owned by KingSett Capital, InnVest Real Estate, and Ivanhoé Cambridge while remaining under the Fairmont brand. The Royal York continues to be one of North America’s most exclusive destinations, offering unparalleled luxury. It has hosted many high-profile guests, including attendees of the G20 Summit in 2010. The Fairmont Royal York remains an iconic place for visitors to experience Toronto’s history and elegance.

Architectural Highlights of the Royal York Hotel

The architectural firms Ross and Macdonald and Sproatt and Rolph designed the Royal York for the Canadian Pacific Railway. The building’s Châteauesque style included a steeply pitched roof adorned with dormer windows and griffin-like grotesques. The architects incorporated Art Deco elements, such as a stepped façade and neoclassical motifs, creating a distinctive design. The interior boasted stunning crystal chandeliers, hand-carved wooden ceilings, and gleaming Romanesque decor, epitomizing Edwardian elegance.

The hotel featured 1,000+ rooms, equipped with cutting-edge technology, including private baths and telephones. Its majestic lobby, illuminated by dazzling chandeliers, remains a hallmark of its design.

Location of the Royal York

The Fairmont Royal York stands at 100 Front Street West, in the heart of Toronto’s financial district. This area is home to leading banks, corporate headquarters, and international law firms. Its skyline is defined by towering skyscrapers interconnected by the PATH, an underground network filled with boutique shops and fine dining options.

The financial district also serves as Toronto’s transportation hub, with Union Station handling commuter traffic for GO Transit, the city’s main public transit service. The hotel is within walking distance of cultural landmarks like the CN Tower, the Hockey Hall of Fame, and Nathan Phillips Square, as well as Toronto’s scenic Harbourfront and the Scotiabank Arena, home to the historic Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Fairmont Royal York continues to symbolize Toronto’s elegance and rich heritage, offering guests an unforgettable blend of luxury and history.
