However, Diabolo convinced the woman to flee with him to America, taking Reznikov’s savings intended for the wedding. Their plan fell apart, leading to a violent confrontation on the construction site. Armed with an axe, Reznikov chased Diabolo, who defended himself with only a dagger.
Reznikov’s axe left a mark on a door, still visible today. Diabolo fatally stabbed Reznikov in the back and disposed of his body in a shaft, over which a staircase was later built leading to the tower. The fate of Diabolo and the woman remains unknown.
Until 1890, sightings of Reznikov’s ghost were reported, ceasing after a fire broke out in the college. However, mysterious creaks and unexplained sounds continue to be heard, defying expert explanation to this day.
